Interior design and conception of a suspended terrace restaurant room.
Located in Domfront, a medieval town perched at an altitude of 211 meters, the view is one of the restaurant’s major assets. The existing terrace did not allow for enjoying this view, leading to the idea of a suspended dining room to capture the horizon, and of course, covered to accommodate guests year-round.
The restaurateur’s goal was to increase the seating capacity while offering the best possible view. The new space is also intended to host receptions and various events. We had numerous ideas for creating this suspended restaurant room, but two stood out: the first was a modern glass construction with a panoramic view covering the entire terrace. The second was a more authentic, intimate design in keeping with the medieval character of the town.
We consulted a heritage architect and then the Architect of Buildings of France. We were able to identify various elements to preserve, including the turret at the end of the terrace. Despite the encouraging feedback from the ABF, the project could not be realized due to technical and regulatory constraints: difficult access for machinery and limited public evacuation in case of fire.
In parallel, we worked on the interior design, including the creation of a custom bar counter, the expansion of the kitchen, and the renovation of the annex into an office. For the design, the Sicilian restaurateur was inspired by the colors of the character Harlequin with whom he identifies. Comprising red, green, blue, and yellow, this presented a significant artistic challenge. The decor reflects this mix, with each room of the restaurant connected subtly and elegantly by color.
